A Brief History of the Calendar Today we take the precision of our calendar for granted, seldom considering the remarkable journey that made it possible. Yet the calendar we use every day is the result of more than 5,000 years of observation, mathematics, astronomy and human ingenuity. From the earliest attempts to track the Sun, Moon and seasons to the sophisticated systems that keep our clocks aligned with the motions of the celestial sphere, the story of the calendar is one of continual refinement and discovery. Join GRASSA for an engaging presentation that explores this fascinating history, highlighting the challenges our ancestors faced and the astronomical principles that continue to shape the way we measure time. Monthly astronomy meeting at the George Botanical Gardens. Our main presenter will be Johann Swanepoel who will give a presentation on shaping and testing of two fast 20 inch optical telescope mirrors. This inspiring talk is a must for anyone who is interested in building a telescope.

Our main presenter will be Case Rijsdijk who will give a talk on the James Webb Telescope. The James Webb Space Telescope is the world's largest, most powerful, and most complex space science telescope ever built and looks only at the infrared part of the spectrum. In this talk Case will look at it some detail: is history, construction and some of its most recent results.
